Every new year brings a fresh list of resolutions, and for Splash the Pelican, 2026 is all about saying yes to new adventures. On Splash’s list? Sailing! Not just any sailing—but real-deal adventure aboard the Chardonnay II, slicing through coastal waters with seabirds overhead and a salty breeze ruffling feathers. Of course, nothing ever comes easy for this determined pelican.

Every time he sets off to accomplish one of his resolutions the weather seems like it might be out to sabotage his efforts—if you recall the rainy lead up to the Clam Chowder Cook-Off, you know the pattern. This time Splash was all signed up for the Seaside Company employee sail scheduled for Monday, April 13th and boy did it rain the days before. But true to form, the clouds parted right on cue. Ready to enjoy the ocean breeze, yummy refreshments, and good company, team members gathered at the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor to board the beautiful Chardonnay II, a Santa Cruz ’70 custom built by renowned boat builder, Bill Lee. For 25 years the boat has been a beloved symbol of Santa Cruz, providing unforgettable sailing experiences for locals and tourists alike.

Like most pelicans, Splash is use to gliding and soaring over the majestic Monterey Bay using his mighty wings, so having his feet firmly planted on the boat deck and finding his sea legs was a new experience. From the moment Splash stepped aboard the white deck of the Chardonnay the amazing crew, Captain John, and First Mates Cullem and Kate, eased his nerves. With lines coiled neatly, polished railings gleaming in the sun, and the harbor stretching out behind, Splash—wings out wide—was ready to embrace life at sea. This was start to a real sailing adventure!

Learning the Ropes

Captain John took Splash under his wing and showed him the ropes, literally. So much so that part way through Splash was at the helm, oversized beak pointed toward open water, navigating the boat around the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Waving ‘Hi!’ to his fellow sea animals as we passed the sea lions lounging under the Wharf.

A Perfect Day Under Sail

Once the sails were up, the magic really kicked in. First Mates Cullem and Kate showed their sea legs as they masterfully navigated around the deck handing out hot slices and cold drinks as the boat sped through the Bay. Passengers relaxed along the deck, soaking in the motion of the boat and snapping photos. Splash made the most of every moment—posing mid-ship, commanding the helm, and striking a cinematic stand at the bow with wings stretched wide. Splash embodied the spirit of the day, fully embracing the wind and the water below.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

The adventure wasn’t without teamwork, and the crew onboard worked together with practiced coordination—especially in one action packed moment when a passenger’s hat flew into the ocean and the team jumped into action to navigate around and swooped it up with a large net! Splash watched closely, clearly in awe of the skill and dedication of the crew.

By the time the boat returned to the dock, Splash’s second 2026 resolution was officially complete! The boat sat peacefully at the dock once more, sails down, but the sense of accomplishment was unmistakable. New skills learned, new memories made, and proof once again that a little patience, and a lot of optimism, can turn looming clouds into smooth sailing. Splash had such an amazing time on the Chardonnay II, he recommends everyone try it! And with a new selection of unique, themed specialty sails, there is a sail for everyone (even the giant pelicans in your life). Be sure to check them out and book your spot today!

Stay tuned as Splash tackles the rest of his resolutions!
