Strike a Chord: Karaoke Nights at Santa Cruz’s Boardwalk Bowl

More than just bowling

Based on its name and long history you’d expect to find friendly and competitive games of bowling happening at Boardwalk Bowl, but did you know it is also the site of a robust karaoke culture? Bowling itself first appeared on the Boardwalk in 1909, when a four-lane duckpin alley opened inside what’s now part of the Haunted Castle ride. Check out the blog for more info. Bowling pinsAs someone who strongly believes in the early 20th century adage, “music self-played is happiness self-made,” I’m a big fan of any opportunity to invite people into the process of making and performing music. Since joining the Santa Cruz Seaside Company I’ve been delighted to see how this idea is advanced seven nights a week for all ages at Boardwalk Bowl!

Karaoke every night

Beyond daily family fun at “the bowl,” magic also happens every night at Coasters Bar & Grill, where karaoke kicks off every evening. No matter when you visit, you can sign-up to grab the mic and let your inner rock star shine.

Karaoke at Coasters isn’t about perfection—it’s about participation. Regulars describe the scene as full of ‘local characters,’ which adds charm and unpredictability to every performance. Whether you’re crooning a classic ballad or rapping a chart-topper, the crowd cheers you on like family. And the reputation extends beyond Santa Cruz County– a couple of regulars were recently featured in an NPR story!

Coasters pairs its karaoke nights with a menu that hits all the right notes—think juicy burgers, pizzas, and craft cocktails. Grab a bite between songs or sip a local brew while you wait for your turn. And if you’re feeling competitive, mix in a round of bowling or try Atomic Bowling under black lights for an extra splash of excitement on Thursday and Sunday evenings.

Arrive early for the best spot: Karaoke nights can get busy, especially on weekends. Show up early to snag a table near the stage. Pick crowd-pleasers like, ‘Sweet Caroline’ or ‘Don’t Stop Believin,’ that always get the audience singing along. Beat stage fright by starting with a duet or bring friends up with you—there is strength in numbers! Stay for a while! The vibe gets livelier as the night progresses, so stick around for the late-night crowd.

Make it a family affair: Coasters is open to all ages before 9pm, when the bar becomes 21+ only, but if you’re there early bring the kids and showcase the talent of your family band!
